About the class:

Pregnancy is a unique time in a person’s practice to listen and feel oneself differently. Week by week, you are transformed, shifting and shaping in new ways. Prenatal Yoga offers a great opportunity to connect with oneself, one’s body, mind and spirit and prepare for birth in a sacred and practical way.

The postpartum body is learning to reintegrate and recoordinate following the incredible transformation of pregnancy and birth.  Postnatal yoga offers tools for using breath and movement to build a new relationship with the body, find release in areas that have tension and discomfort and build strength and stamina in the inner core for the demands of life and parenthood.

About the Instructor:
Sonia is an occupational therapist specializing in pelvic health with a focus on the perinatal population. In addition to her private practice, Sonia works at the Functional Pelvis and also treats pre and postpartum clients at Nettle Wellness, a midwifery practice in Bedstuy Brooklyn.

Sonia graduated from SUNY Downstate with a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy and received a Bachelor of the Arts in Dance from Oberlin College.  In her work with clients, she uses awareness training, targeted exercise, breath work, yoga, manual therapy and lifestyle modification to help her clients find relief from conditions such as pelvic pain, prolapse, dyspareunia (pain with sex), incontinence/leaking, constipation, diastasis recti, general deconditioning and pre and postnatal complications.  Sonia is skilled in helping her clients navigate the psychological and social impact that pelvic floor issues have on relationships and day to day life.

Sonia trained in pelvic floor rehabilitation with Herman & Wallace Institute and Lindsey Vestal of the Functional Pelvis and studied pre and postnatal yoga with Jane Austin, Lara Kohn Thompson and Beth Donnelly Caban.  In addition to her work as a pelvic floor therapist, Sonia teaches prenatal and postnatal yoga and leads new parent support groups at The Wild in Brooklyn, NY.

Sonia lives in Brooklyn and Stone Ridge, NY with her husband Michael and son Casio.
